Striped Landscape -

The first time I came across the beautiful “Tokyo night scene” expressed so gracefully in Japanese lacquer with pearl on its surface (so-called Raden technique), I was deeply moved.
That was 15 years ago, but I still cannot forget the intricate and unique combination of tradition and modernity of Ms. Miyoshi’s artwork.
I invite her to celebrate the 20th anniversary of my gallery.

As night falls, the city gets covered in a tumult of dazzling lights.
Shells tinted with gold or silver foil are cut into dots or fine lines and illuminate the town on the deep black urushi (lacquer) surface.
The moment I place the first piece of shell on the lacquer, my thoughts happen to extend to all the workings going on beneath this light.
I wonder how many a sorrow or joy there might be.
While adhering the shells one by one, I ponder over the hours each person must be spending.

This is my first individual exhibition in Kyoto.
How will my raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) city appear in the dignified space at Gion-Konishi?I hope you will enjoy the show.
